Selecting Window Coverings for my latest project

INSPIRATION

THE VELA PROPERTIES

By Melissa Bonney, Director, The Designory

As a designer, creating a feeling when you walk into a home is the epitome of success.  There’s nothing more serene than a dreamy sunlit home by day, nor more calming than a darkened, candlelit one by night. Choosing the right window treatments to elicit these feelings might seem like an easy undertaking, but as a creative there were a lot of considerations that came into play.

Inspired by their proximity to the ocean, our latest project the Vela Properties are a boutique offering of luxury homes designed and delivered by my company, The Designory. Each home speaks to the senses, enlivened by the nearby coastline and the raw yet luxurious nature of the ocean.

Samudra House

Samudra, the first of the properties, sits proudly on the corner of the allotment under a majestic gum tree, the oversized bespoke timber windows capture its beauty and draw in the northern sun and spectacular amber sunsets.

We wanted to retain the visual access to the timber accents and decided upon the Luxaflex® S-Wave Sheer Curtains (in Chloe fabric – in the colour Mist) for both the Living room and Rumpus room. As one of the first to trial the new motorised curved track, we were beyond impressed with the smooth install and motorised features. Streamlined and high performance, the curtains add a certain je ne sais quoi to the stunning Rumpus room. I adore them!

Throughout the rest of Samudra, we decided upon the Luxaflex® Blockout Curtains (in Amadora fabric- in the colour Ice) for the Master bedroom and the Luxaflex® Duette® Shades (in Bamboo Fabric in colour White Truffle) for a streamline look on the high privacy windows of the Guest Bedrooms.  As this house is a holiday rental, privacy and rested nights are essential. The block out fabric lends itself to the most epic of sleep ins.

For the Bunk Room, we chose Luxaflex® Blockout Roller Blinds (in Caspian fabric- in the colour Froth). Sleeping children, as we all know, are a must for holidaymakers! When closed, these beautiful blinds darken the room and assist with daytime naps and uninterrupted sleep for little ones. It’s important to say too, all Luxaflex products have child safety options.

Sikata House

The second home, Sikata, is my own, as well as a part-time holiday rental. It has all the hallmarks of the global traveller and is an exploration of the concept of wabi sabi. This elusive beauty of imperfection is aptly showcased using stunning hand-crafted materials, vintage furniture pieces, and treasures sourced from all over the world.

For the Rumpus Room, the first room you see on walking through the gate, I wanted to be able to draw the curtains out of the way during the day or leave them floating in the breeze when the doors are open. With floor to ceiling glass, the Luxaflex® S-Wave Sheer Curtain (in Aylin fabric -and colour Mist) on a curved motorised track worked beautifully – allowing them to wrap back into the room and open the doors fully to the landscape.

The Master Bedroom in Sikata features the Luxaflex® S-Wave Blockout Curtain (in Burton fabric in the colour Natural) on a black rod, with a hand wand pull it’s a little more traditional and feminine but just as dynamic! As a busy Mum and business owner who doesn’t usually get much sleep the blockout material is a God Send.

Luxaflex® Roller Blinds (in custom Mauritius Blockout fabric in colours Champagne and Drizzle) were used in the Guest Bedrooms, and Temple Blockout fabric in colour Stephney for the Bunk Room. Having the option to select custom fabrics for each room allowed us to get creative, matching and complementing textures and tones throughout.

Lavana House

Lavana, the final property, has been bought by a family. It oozes quintessential Australian coastal style with its white, sandy tones and subtle hints of seaglass greens throughout. Fresh and playful, this home is saturated in light and embodies a true Byron Bay vibe.

The choice for the Rumpus Room, was one of ambience over complete blockout – we decided on the Luxaflex® S-Wave Curtain (in Chloe Sheer fabric in the colour Mist) on a motorised track for ease of use.

For the Master Bedroom we were very excited to install the motorised Luxaflex® Luminette® Privacy Sheers. Electing for the Linen Range in the colour Bright White, I love that with a press of a button, and on a single track, you can close the sheer vanes and then opt to rotate back for room darkening. The structured wave shape gives a crisper, more modern look which perfectly complements the design of the house.

For Guest Rooms and the Bunk Room, we chose the motorised Luxaflex® Duette® Shades (in Elan fabric in colour Daisy White). Luxaflex® PolySatin® Shutters in the Main Bathroom complete the Lavana look by providing a sophisticated alternative to blinds and adding a touch of coastal charm.

Bringing the outside in, year-round entertaining has become synonymous with our way of life in Australia. Installing the Luxaflex® Arafura Motorised Folding Arm Awnings in all three homes is the epitome of luxury and provides shade and protection from the weather.  The huge colour range meant we could match the fabrics to the interior schemes and ensure continuity from the front fence to the back.
