Every year, the Pantone Colour Institute release their colour of the year––a tone they predict will dominate trends and determine the shade of everything from interiors to clothing.
This year’s colour, according to the institute, is PANTONE 18-1750: Viva Magenta.
Described by Pantone as, "an unconventional shade for an unconventional time: a new vision," Viva Magenta is a refreshing pick when compared with the pastel and purple hues chosen in previous years.
"Viva Magenta writes a new narrative. Brave and fearless, a pulsating colour whose exuberance promotes optimism and joy," Pantone posted to Instagram.
At a time when there are some negative events dominating our world––from warfare to natural disasters––the Viva Magenta colour alludes to the vigour and strength needed to pave the way for a more positive future.
Encouraging self-expression, Viva Magenta is a vibrant and complex shade of blood red that is a study in contrasts, incorporating both warm and cold tones. It is a shade rooted in nature, descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. This powerful colour is brave and fearless, with an exuberance that promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration.
According to Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Colour Institute, amid the ongoing epidemic, Viva Magenta stands for assurance, confidence, and connectivity in a world struggling to get back on its feet.
Neale Whittaker, Luxaflex brand ambassador, says Viva Magenta is “not for the faint-hearted”.
“It's a rebellious, optimistic, and energetic shade that takes last year's Pantone colour (Very Peri) and mixes it with red for strength and impact. It requires confidence to use Viva Magenta in an interior setting,” says Neale.
“My advice is to use it as a statement colour to add a dramatic twist to neutrals, especially grey-based neutrals. A sofa or a chair in Viva Magenta will certainly pop, but a safer option is to add it through cushions (either as a plain or print), ceramics and vases or an artwork,” says Neale.
“The advantage of colours like Viva Magenta is their instant, transformative effect. The downside is that you can tire of them easily and they are hard to match with other colours. Whether you apply it as a wall paint, window coverings, or even your carpets, Viva Magenta can make a statement, and can be combined with other colours to great effect.”
